Bobbejaan Schoepen (1925-2010) was a pioneer in Belgian music history. In 1948 has was the first to make an international breakthrough. He was a 'total performer' who combined early pop, satirical folk, chansons, country and stand-up comedy. Schoepen was a versatile singer-songwriter, guitarist, actor, and a professional yodeler and whistler. His musical career flourished from 1948 until the mid 60s. From his repertorium of 495 songs 5 million copies were sold, including covers by other international artists, which extended from country-blues, easy listening, comedy, film music and chanson. In 1961 he was the founder of theme park Bobbejaanland. He married in 1961 former opera singer Josée Jongen. Over 43 years they, and later also their children, builded up Bobbejaanland to a family concern with international fame. After the park was sold in 2004, Bobbejaan focussed again on his music career which resulted in new music projects. Their five children are continuing the family legacy.
