I am a needle felt artist and organic farmer based in Central Illinois. Needle felting is a sculpting technique that involves felting wool using a felting needle. These felting needles have tiny downward facing notches along their shafts which catch fibers on the surface of a clump of wool and pull them inward to become entangled with inner fibers as the needle passes through the wool. Because wool fibers have microscopic scales, when they are agitated and pulled together with a felting needle they latch onto each other, causing the wool to felt. Sculpting with a felting needle involves poking a clump of wool repeatedly from all angles until it shrinks and tightens into a firm object of the desired shape and size. Additional clumps of wool or felted shapes can be attached to one another using the needle as well.
