I am, in some respects, the leading edge of a stream of mutating genes reaching back millions upon billions of years. My remote ancestors were loose aggregates of single-celled organisms and could be likened to some kind of slime that, gradually, through evolution, came to function as a single and increasingly complex individual organism.
