Swedish Boy Destroy's debut 'Warpaint EP' is a dark and dramatic coming-of-age tale detailing both the harsh yet beautiful realities surrounding sex, sorrow, death, addiction, deception and dishonesty. Influenced by 90s alternative rock which soundtracked his teens, as well as delving into legacy artists like Jeff Buckley and Joni Mitchell alongside modern emo and trap, ‘Warpaint EP’ is a multi-hued chronicle showcasing a genre bending prowess. Title track serves as a stellar intro addressing the digital apathy of young lives, fusing into ‘You Don’t Want Me When I’m Sober’ which juxtaposes vulnerable lyricism addressing addiction with pop sensibilities, trap beats and punk guitar hooks. ‘Favourite’ toys with acoustic guitar and is a sample heavy slow jam that’s both commanding and sensual, indulging in primal instincts. Confessional ‘As Time Goes By’ follows and ‘Beautiful Crimes’ shines in a nostalgic alt-R&B meets emo ditty. EP culminates with swaggering shoegaze pop of ‘Lights Out’.
