For the past ten years as Apres Pompeii, Weiss has tried many artistic masks--from the baroque bedroom-pop recluse of 2012's LP Empty Ship to the queer-organizer of 2019's Pride Showcase. Now, with new full length record Clay, out August 20, 2021, Apres Pompeii is examining the masks themselves. "I think for myself, along with many others, 2020 was a time of deep, forced introspection. I spent much of my year questioning the type of artist I want to be, the type of art I want to make, and how I want to invest my time." As a result of this bitter work, Clay more than justifies the effort. These nine songs are Apres Pompeii boiled down to its purest form, retaining the genre-playfulness, the poetic and languid phrasing, and the soaring vocals of previous releases while adding a sense of confidence and patience that can only come with experience. Clay is the sound of an artist empowered, wielding strength through vulnerability, unmolded by the world but shaped by life just the same.
