Low End University

Low End University was founded by Mark Michell, an internationally-touring and recording bassist known for his work with Scale the Summit, Tony MacAlpine, Tetrafusion, and Watermox. His most-recent albums were released to Billboard-charting acclaim in the Top 200, Top Rock Albums, Top Independent Albums, Heatseekers Albums, Top Current Albums and Contemporary Jazz Albums categories.

For over a decade, Michell has been teaching clinics to students around the globe while on tour, has enrolled thousands of students through Low End University's online bass academy, and has published six method books for bass guitar. 2016 saw the release of his instructional DVD "Advanced Rock Bass" after signing a worldwide publishing deal with Hal Leonard Music Corporation, and later that year was hand-selected to the panel of professors at the Warwick Bass Camp in Germany to teach alongside the best bass players in the world.

WHAT SONG NEXT?! I still have only heard "Pneuma" from Tool's "Fear Inoculum" album. I had actually planned to do the full album in one video, but can't because it's a copyright mess here on YouTube. It also came in last place on a Patreon poll, so I guess I'll stick to individual song episodes after all. I'll let you guys decide...😎

My 10th FULL-ALBUM Reaction is live on Patreon! www.patreon.com/posts/full-album-shape-113108229

"The Shape of Punk to Come" by Refused is now my favorite episode I’ve put together. It challenged me as a listener, and I couldn’t make any assumptions until the very last note. It’s a whole different play on the word “progressive” than what I’m used to, and kept me in a tailspin from start to finish. These are the types of albums I love analyzing, because they really make you work for it.

Swing by and dive into this cinematic listen with me! For $2.00, you can also access all past album episodes. Your support makes this channel possible. 💙🎸

Another FULL-ALBUM reaction just posted on Patreon! www.patreon.com/posts/full-album-caste-111118564

When I first heard Propagandhi's "Victory Lap", I immediately had one of those "Where has this band been my whole life?" moments, and hearing "Supporting Caste" completely drove it home. This album was such a visceral experience both musically and lyrically, and going into this episode with a better understanding of the band granted me the opportunity to appreciate them in a whole different way. These songs (and the messages behind them) have a way of sticking with you even days after hearing them, and it's a rare thing when bands have that superpower. It left me with a unique feeling that's hard to put into words. What a band...

Marky, circa 2005. I used that same bass in today’s episode. 😌

Low End University

Last week, Low End University crossed 500 members on Patreon! Unbelievably grateful to all of you who have supported the channel in any way, but especially over there. As a "thank you", I just dropped a bonus FULL-ALBUM REACTION for "Destruction by Definition" by The Suicide Machines! Check it out here: www.patreon.com/posts/full-album-by-110054931

I suspected this band had a few tricks up their sleeves after hearing their song "Hey", but not quite like this. Bassist Royce Nunley floored me on just about every song. And...those blisteringly-fast tempos? The drumming? The guitar playing? These guys, truly, are machines. Pun intended. In terms of the most standout bass performance on a full-album episode so far? Front to back? This album wins.

For just $2.00, you can listen along with all of us and access all previous episodes I've done. Hope to see you there!

An older Mastodon track came on shuffle earlier, and I realized I haven’t listened to much of anything since “Crack the Skye” was released. Any suggestions for the channel?!

New FULL-ALBUM REACTION on Patreon! www.patreon.com/posts/full-album-bad-109187795

Before this, I had only heard "Epiphany", but Bad Religion's "The Process Of Belief" had endless nods to the melodic genius of that track with a zillion more surprises woven into the rest of the album. I'm still unsure what to make of this band...but what I do know is that they are deep, complex, and have endless layers to peel back. And then some. This is undoubtedly one of the most unique punk bands I've ever heard.

Come hang with me (and the Patreon crew) as we listen through this incredibly-nuanced piece of art! For $2.00, you can also access ALL previous episodes. Thanks for supporting the channel!!! 😍

Lagwagon's "Trashed" is such a cool take on the "skate punk" sound I think I'm more familiar with, but kicked into overdrive with absolute genius riff-writing, harmony usage, and honestly - some of the boldest bass playing I've heard since I discovered Iron Maiden. As a bassist, Jesse Buglione not only understands the riffs, but dances around them with such a fresh-yet-unorthodox approach. This also might be one of the most beautifully-mixed fingerstyle bass tones I've heard on a rock album - which is rare.

Come hang with me and the Patreon family as we listen through this absolute riff-factory of an album. Let's get Trashed!!! 🤪🤘🏼⚡️
