Efunroye Tinubu, a prominent figure during the height of the slave trade in Lagos, Nigeria, left an indelible mark on history. Her involvement in the slave trade was not merely incidental; it was marked by extreme actions. Even after the British successfully abolished slavery in Nigeria, Tinubu defied the prevailing laws and continued to engage in slave trading, particularly with the Portuguese.
In a notorious trade deal with the Portuguese, she expressed a chilling preference: rather than selling slaves at a low price, she would rather sever their throats and cast them overboard. This ruthless approach underscores the depths of her commitment to this brutal enterprise.

On a separate occasion, Efunroye Tinubu was discovered escorting a child to the slave market. When questioned about her intentions, she responded matter-of-factly: “I have a large house-hold and I must feed them well. I need money to do that, that's why”.

Tinubu’s legacy is paradoxical. Despite her active participation in the slave trade, monuments now dot Nigeria, honoring her memory. One such monument bears the inscription “Wings of Liberty.” Curiously, there is no evidence that she ever fought against the slave trade. Instead, she faced banishment from Lagos by the British due to her persistent involvement in slavery even after its prohibition.

This twist of events raises questions about how history is remembered and memorialized. Africans, in erecting monuments to honor their slave masters, inadvertently perpetuate a narrative that casts these oppressors as liberators.
