On Sept. 11, 2001, U.S. Army Reservist, Sgt. Lawrence Provost was substitute teaching just north of Syracuse, N.Y. Upon learning of the attacks on the #WorldTradeCenter and #Pentagon, Provost instinctively drove four hours to New York City to assist first responders and aid search and rescue crews at ground zero. A year later, Provost deployed with his @USArmyReserve unit to Afghanistan as part of the war on terrorism.

Tech. Sgt. James Marion Logan landed with the @USArmy Company I, 3d Battalion, 141st Infantry, 36th Infantry Division #OTD 1943 on the beaches of Salerno during Operation Avalanche, a significant phase in the Allied invasion of Italy. During the initial hours of the first wave, Logan single-handedly captured a German machine gun position and two German soldiers. His actions were instrumental in securing the beachhead and served as a significant inspiration to his fellow Soldiers.
Logan was awarded the #MedalofHonor during a ceremony near Naples, Italy on June 6, 1944. Later in life at a Memorial Day ceremony, Logan reflected, “you remember the people who died close to you,” – a sobering reminder of the cost of war and the last measure of devotion by many Soldiers that day.

Born in rural Tennessee in 1887, Alvin York embraced pacifism and reconciled his beliefs with military service when he was drafted in 1917 during #WorldWarI. Arriving in France in June 1918, then-Cpl. York led a daring attack against a German machine gun nest, capturing 132 prisoners and later praying for the fallen on both sides of the battle. York was promoted to sergeant and awarded the #MedalofHonor for his courageous actions.
In this episode of Curator's Corner, see York's olive-drab Model 1917 trench helmet that he wore during his Medal of Honor actions in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and is on display in the Nation Overseas Gallery.

Historians often note the brief military engagement at Fort Necessity #OTD 1754 for two major reasons: it was the first combat experience of then-21-year-old Virginia Lieutenant Colonel George Washington and the first battle of the French and Indian War between Britain and France.
How did Washington evolve as a military leader from a series of defeats in service of the crown to the future commander in chief of the Continental Army and first president of the United States?
Watch historians David L. Person and Christian E. Fearer discuss Washington’s formative period and the Battle of Fort Necessity in the Battle Brief - "A Wilderness of Difficulties”: George Washington’s First War, now available.
