Just wanted to share with you guys a big moment in my fitness journey! I’m proud to announce that starting in September, I’ll be personally funding and helping run a unique study at the University of British Columbia. It’s a project I’ve been working on behind the scenes for the past 6 months. The main goal of the study is to investigate if challenging your muscles in their stretched position leads to more growth - an area of research I’ve become fascinated with.
.
We’re using 3 custom machines, which by the switch of a pin, can make the exact same exercise more difficult in the beginning (during the stretch) or in the end (when the muscle is less stretched). We’ll be testing the chest, shoulders, and glutes - 3 of the most understudied muscles because of the high cost of using MRI for proper measurement. In my latest YouTube video I explain the study protocol and the science behind it in more depth: https://youtu.be/r7cWHoT8aaQ
.
It’s a massive project to take on, but it’ll help shape how we workout and the exercises we choose to maximize our results. Science has done so much for me and my channel, so getting involved in advancing the field is the least I can do to give back.
.
I’ll share more details and give some updates once the study is on its way. But I’m excited for this next chapter and being able to give back to a field that has brought so much to me! For science! 🙏

Wow. 6 million. I've always been a quiet, nerdy kid so making videos for millions of people is the last thing I ever thought I’d be doing.

I’ll be honest, I started hitting the gym after I saw Ryan Gosling shirtless in Crazy Stupid Love. The way Emma Stone looked at him in awe, I was willing to do whatever it took to get there 😂.

I went on to study Kinesiology at University and that’s when I was first made aware that they actually publish studies related to fitness/nutrition. I was OBSESSED and I wanted to share the research with other gym bros. That’s when the YouTube channel was born.

To film the videos I’d sneak into a gym at midnight when nobody was there and I’d film until early morning. I did that every single week for years. Eventually I started paying for a small gym to film at and I remember thinking how cool it was to have a key and my very own film space.

Then once the pandemic hit, I bought a squat rack, barbell, and bench and it was the greatest feeling having my own little garage gym. Then, a couple years after that, we built out our very own Built With Science headquarters and full gym. Doesn’t feel real sometimes.

This all couldn’t have been possible without your support. I’m forever grateful. Whether you’re an OG follower or just stumbled across my content recently, thank you for your support! We’re just getting started!

P.S. - shout out to my fellow pinoys 🇵🇭 ! Yes, I'm half Filipino. Every time I mention it in a video I get a bunch of comments from fellow pinoys who had no idea what my background is haha.

I remember when I first started my YouTube channel. As an introvert who absolutely HATED the idea of talking to a camera, it was the last thing I thought I’d be doing. But I so badly wanted to create videos that I wish I could’ve seen when I first began my fitness journey, that I decided to give it a shot. Yesterday my channel just hit 5 million subscribers, and the mission hasn’t changed.

Thank you all for being part of this amazing journey with me. I hope I’ve been able to help you in some way/shape/form along the way.

And to those of you who have dreams and aspirations, but feel held back by fear, I want to remind you that starting is always the hardest part. Don't let fear stop you from pursuing your passions. Take that first step and trust the journey. You can achieve anything you set your mind to.
