Stress!

Now that the tax season is ending, I can relax... Although, there is still a lot of work to be done!

Something I have constantly struggled with is stress. It's not easy to manage or prevent it.

However, a BIG no-no for all accountants should be not to let stress impact your commitment and integrity of your work. Don't rush accounts, calculations, or tax returns as you are stressed and overwhelmed. Being responsible for a manageable workload is a must for a compliant and competent accountant... Enough said!

The best accounting package?

Many years ago, when I had more hair and weighed less, I started my accounting qualifications. The software we used was Sage 50 Accounts. I would later become a Sage trainer, helping businesses with Sage Instant and Sage 50 Accounts. I loved it, but to be honest, there was no alternative, Sage had the monopoly.

As time passed, QuickBooks Online become my favourite. It seemed quicker and less clunky than Sage. Nowadays, Xero is my favourite. I find it the most user-friendly with all the features I need as an accountant, but I still use all three.

What has been your experience?

The deadline!

Another tax deadline is approaching (31 January 2025). I've nearly made it! I aged 10 years the last 2 weeks, but I've nearly done it! 😅 Only joking, it's been very manageable, and I have room for new clients, if you need assistance.

The best accounting tools!

Last week, I wrote a post about The Best Bookkeeping Tools. It's now time for The Best Accounting Tools!

The essential tools you need to effectively do accounting, including year-end and management accounts are:

1️⃣ A calculator. Either a tangible one or one on your computer or phone. I personally use the desktop calculator on my Microsoft package.

2️⃣ Excel. My job wouldn't be possible without it. I use Excel to track sales and expenses, calculate depreciation, create management accounts, and more.

3️⃣ Bookkeeping software. Either your own or your clients/employers. The big three are:

4️⃣ Tax software. You will need software to help you prepare year-end accounts and tax returns. This software is usually not pricey. I use IRIS Elements: www.iris.co.uk/products/iris-elements/#products

5️⃣ Education. Too many businesses try to do year-end accounts without any formal training or qualifications. This usually leads to costly mistakes. If you don't know what you're doing, don't use Google; ask an accountant! If you need training or would like an accountant to take over: www.smaccountinguk.com/

6️⃣ A notepad and pen. I love my desk notepad.

7️⃣ An email account. You'll need to receive and possibly send invoices. You may also need to liaise with clients/work colleagues.

8️⃣ A computer or laptop. You cannot do any bookkeeping without one! All basic bookkeeping packages will run on a simple computer. You don't need anything fancy. You will be typing and storing data, so a desktop computer is better than a laptop.

Ask yourself, 'What is depreciation?', 'Why are assets depreciated?', 'Which assets are depreciated?', and 'How do I account for depreciation?'. If you don't know the answers to these questions, I suggest you take my free course.
