"The point of songwriting is not to try to shape our experience to our will but to simply report on our journey through the world. And in the case of “Note to Self,” there is a well worn part of my brain which is most comfortable feeling hopeless.
And if I can’t help but to judge myself in these moments, what I can do as a songwriter is decline to judge it by trying to manipulate it into something nice or cogent or proscriptive for how one lead’s a “productive life” or whatever—and instead to simply report that these moments come and this sad, resigned little place exists in my heart.
And when I visit that place, occasionally it hits me: maybe this feeling is right? Maybe it’s not just wallowing. Maybe I have had good reasons to feel betrayed by people, to feel lonely, to feel like giving up. And so, in writing the song, I’m speaking a truth that I’m too judgmental to acknowledge in my daily quest to perform a less self-pitying person to the world. And the wonderful thing about music is it allows us to inhabit these unseen and unspoken parts of ourselves, even if we are only tourists for the duration of the song."
