Here’s why so many startups struggle to bring their product/services to market:

Usually: Poor product/market fit and lack of business/marketing planning.

Marketing is usually an afterthought and more research is typically needed to better understand the target customer.

Below are a few marketing tips to take your startup to the next level in 2024:

💡Understand your target market. Before anything else, founders must validate the need for their products/services with the target market. Without this step, the likelihood of success is low.

Once you’ve validated your offer with your ideal market, here are a few marketing tips…

💡Establish a marketing plan early on. So many businesses and startups neglect this and they have no strategy for finding new buyers.

💡Get your first few use cases or customers, and then focus on creating content for your startup. This data will help you to create more targeted content that will make a long-term impact on your startup.

Once you are ready to publish content, it is important to create content based on each step of your customer’s journey.

💡Focus on building a personal brand. A personal brand can do wonders for your startup because people are getting to know you - the founder, CMO, COO, etc. If people know you, they are more likely to be interested in what you are selling.

💡Understand the key players in your industry - this means thought leaders, potential referral partners, and dream clients. Connecting with these people regularly will help you to develop meaningful relationships within your industry and increase exposure for your startup.

What are some other marketing tips for startups? I'd love to get your thoughts in the comments!

Want to improve customer retention? Add more value.

I’ve been using a tool called ConvertKit for a while to manage some of my email marketing activities and landing pages.

If you are familiar with the world of email marketing, then you know there are so many tools out there that offer this service.

Each month I receive an email invoice from ConvertKit. At first glance, this is just another invoice for a service that I use.

So, what does ConvertKit do differently?

In the email with the invoice, before I read anything about this month’s fee, I’m greeted with the following:

“Hey there,

We wanted to say a massive thanks for being a member of the ConvertKit family! We’re thrilled to get to work on ConvertKit every day and couldn’t do it without your support.”

ConvertKit starts by thanking me for being a member of their family - and this is also the text that shows before I even click on the email.

In addition to thanking me for being a valued customer, ConvertKit includes a few helpful resources to help me grow my business online.

I have been really impressed with this format because not a lot of businesses are doing this. Understanding your customers, paying attention to them, and even thanking them are simple ways to stand out and improve customer retention.

What are some other companies that are great at customer retention (and why)? Let me know in the comments!

Everyone wants a quick fix.

I see this time and time again in marketing and business.

There are a lot of people out there selling a ‘quick fix,’ whether you want to 3x your business this year, triple your Instagram followers, or 10x your email list.

There will always be someone selling a solution, promising quick results.

After being in business for a few years, I’ve come to realize that quick fixes are, for the most part, a lie.

Here’s what to do instead:

✅ Get Creative: Identify three possible solutions to your problem.

✅ Consistency Wins: Start implementing one of those solutions, consistently. Most people don’t see immediate results, and this is especially true for more challenging problems.

✅ Pivot When Needed: Give yourself time to implement your solution and see results. In this world of instant gratification, this is extremely challenging.

Once you’ve truly given the first solution a chance, and if it really isn’t working - start solution number two.

What other advice would you give to those solving business problems?

I don’t care if they say marketing is fluff.

Oftentimes in business, people are so focused on the bottom line that critical aspects of building a business are ignored.

When talking with clients, 99.99999% of them lack this…

A marketing strategy.

I totally understand the importance of hitting the ground running with potential clients and taking action on what is in front of you, but it is really challenging to scale a business this way.

Just imagine…

You have grown your business to the point where you are booked out for a year and have multiple employees, but you don’t know how you are going to promote your business three months from now. You haven’t done the research on your target market, and your messaging reflects this.

Your business might be growing right now, but if you don’t have a plan to get in front of the right people moving forward, this may not always be the case.

Having all of these pieces in place is so important because people have a more clear understanding of who you are targeting, and your marketing actually works.
