The Organic Waste Bin
In my apartment building, there are about 30 families. We have three large garbage bins: one for packaging, one for paper waste, and one for general household trash. There's also a small bin for organic waste. While the larger bins fill up quickly, the organic waste bin is almost always half-empty. Most of the space in it is taken up by things like wilted bouquets.
I guess many of my neighbors don’t cook very often. For me, though, every meal results in a full bowl of kitchen scraps (as shown in the first photo) – even from a simple dish like this vegetable spaghetti recipe: Chinese cabbage, carrots, onions, kohlrabi, and garlic. What about you? Do you also feed the organic bin regularly, or is it just me? 😄

Fried rice is probably the most common dish for using up leftover rice. But today's fried rice is a bit different—it’s inspired by southern Chinese oil rice, which is usually made with sticky rice and shiitake mushrooms. I’ve simplified the recipe and replaced ham or sausage with smoked tofu. Next time you have leftover rice, be sure to give it a try! I’d love to hear your feedback:-)!

In China, tofu sticks, or fuzhu (腐竹), are a popular traditional ingredient with a long history – not a meat substitute! They are made by cooking soy milk until a film forms on the surface. This film is lifted, rolled into long tubes, dried, and packaged. Fuzhu contains three times the protein of tofu and can be found in Asian grocery stores. The sticks are versatile: you can stir-fry, steam, braise, or serve them cold in a salad. Preparation is super easy – give it a try!

Tofu is a great invention, but Fuzhu (dried tofu sticks) might be even better. It has a rich texture, is packed with more plant-based protein, and best of all, because it's dried, it stores well for a longer time. If you haven't tried it yet, this recipe could be the perfect way to start! All you need to do is pick some up next time you visit an Asian market. Hope you enjoy it, and I look forward to your feedback!
