Haven't posted here in a while, so thought I'd make a little channel/personal update.

We're nearly at 1 million subscribers! Crazy - I started this channel during the 2020 lockdowns as I was finishing my GCSE Music, just for a bit of personal transcriptions. Terrible transcriptions, but that's besides the point. They didn't get many views, until 6 months later when one clip took off and got 250k views, which was a lot at the time. In 2021, I began to post more regularly and before I knew it, there was a community of 100,000 of you learning about transcriptions.

How time flies! We're only 14,000 subscribers away from a million and have now hit 400,000,000 views. Most of you will know that I don't do much transcribing myself anymore - I'm about to turn 21, going into my final year of university, and just don't have the time asI run a web development agency too. However, I'm still doing my best to find a video a week to share with you all and plan to do so as long as I can.

If you haven't been seeing videos, that's because they're in shorts and are recommended slightly differently. I haven't just 'decided' to only make shorts - it's just that videos under 60 seconds perform better there and videos under 60 seconds are the ones that interest you guys most.

My goal with the channel has always been to share awesome musical stuff and educational resources widely to help break down the barriers into music appreciation and theory, and I think it's working. I hear from teachers playing videos in classes, or people who picked up their instruments after watching these videos. It's awesome.

Thank you to each and every one of you who tunes in - if you'd like to support the channel, the best way to do that is contributing video suggestions on our Discord server - finding the best of the best videos is the hardest part of this channel! discord.gg/qsnkmzCMk8

Who am I? I keep my channel fairly anonymous as I want everyone to be here for the music, not me. I'm sure you all have some unique idea of who's behind this channel, and you may wish to keep it like that. But, if you want the detailed story, NYT released an article which explores the niche world of music transcription! Happy reading. www.nytimes.com/2024/03/12/arts/music/george-colli…

We're back! If you didn't know, 5 days ago Youtube removed all monetisation on my channel, which meant I wouldn't be able to fund future videos for you all. Now, it's been reinstated. For you guys, this means nothing much should change - I'll be able to continue working with various people to push out new videos.

Is it acceptable that Youtube just flicked a switch on my channel without notice? Of course not. But we seem to have crossed this bump in the road and they've fixed their decision - better late than never. I'm not going to make a Patreon (though will have to if it happens again), but if you want to support the channel you can contribute video suggestions at discord.gg/tvV84mW5F7 - I read every video suggestion.

Transcriptions are here to stay, and I hope you all are too.

So, my channel got removed from the YouTube Partner Program yesterday. That means that videos I post here cannot earn any money. I work with freelancers to produce the videos, so monetisation is really essential to be able to break even on the channel. I appealed, which was denied, so I'm now trying to sort it out with my channel rep.

I don't want to be another channel that falls victim to the 'I'm quitting Youtube' tsunami that's happening right now. Rest assured, I'm not going to give up just yet, but if I can't sort it out there will only be a few videos left.

The YouTube review team just doesn't appear to understand the complexity and value of music transcription. I'm making you all aware of this as if the appeal doesn't get overturned, I'm just not going to have a choice other than to stop posting videos. I'm a full-time university student so don't have the time to dedicate hours upon hours to each video (transcribing takes a while!).

Remember, everything ever published here is available for free (unless the artist didn't want that) on my site (georgecolliermusic.com/), so I hope you all still find the transcriptions useful for your musical journeys! I know many of you watch them in band, I know music teachers show them in classes for their students, I know people play them so they can play solos themselves. That's only possible because of the support of all of you guys and I'm so grateful for that! We're making such a positive impact on music education and I really hope that can continue.

Is there anything you can do? Unfortunately, not that much. You support the channel already with your subscriptions and comments, but perhaps it'd be nice to have some comments here that highlight the value of transcriptions and how they've helped you through music. I really appreciate you all!

trying out youtube shorts because there's lots of clips shorter than 30 seconds that will go great on the channel :) I may continue with longer videos every 3 days and then do shorts in addition though - we'll see ;)

okay i posted a poll about scroll bar but people misunderstood - here's the same poll again but clarified so i can get better results :) **scroll bar is the (normally) blue rectangle that follows over the sheet music**. the sheet music is of course staying, but the blue scrolly thing was introduced introduced in december 2021 and i've kept it since as it makes it easier to follow for some.
