I help people reach their financial goals by providing tips on paying off debt, saving money, and making money. Take control of your money, take control of your life. I'm Sarah Wilson, aka Budget Girl, a 30-something young professional who paid off $33,000 of student loan debt in 3 years on just $26k and documented the many ups and downs of it all through weekly vlogs. If I can do it, you can too! I make videos about how to empower yourself to manage your money on any income, pay off debt and build the life of your dreams on less.

One year anniversary of my second duplex purchase and I’m currently sitting in my cozy living room here watching tv and very proud of all I did to make this place home. It was a LOT of work, but worth it.

We can do hard things. Sometimes I have to drag myself and it takes way longer than expected, but looking back, the time will pass anyway.

Gross warning: All that said, I lost two.5 toenails on this renovation and those are probably going to take another 6 months to grow out. Maybe by then I’ll be fully recovered 😂

Did you know that Jacob and I collect stained glass? I started picking up a few pieces about 8 years ago from garage sales and thrift stores - always a little heartbroken that such gorgeous and time-intensive pieces of art were without homes.

We collect very strategically, only getting pieces that we love and are in the motifs we appreciate, and I love looking for cool pieces in antique shops when we travel. Weirdly I don’t mind if a piece has a couple cracks, I can seal them and I think it adds to their story and history.

In this new duplex I finally have some windows where I can display my little collection and I love looking at it every day.

I think collecting should be slow, with great intent and done over a lifetime.

Do you have any small but beloved collections? How long have you been collecting them?

I’ve locked in my 2025 goals and I’m again using a bingo board to help me keep them in front of my eyes as my lock screen!

I firmly believe goal setting works and have been working off my last board for the past two years, the new property took up the vast majority of 2024, but we made it!

My list is a mix of fun new experiences, financial goals, personal, etc. and if you’d like to do your own, I have over a dozen cute and free editable blank and Canva file link versions at budgetgirl.com

What is one of your new year goals? I hope to cross tanghulu off this month!

How many days into the year did your first budget whoopsie happen?

I hope it hasn’t happened yet for you, but unfortunately unexpected costs will happen eventually for all of us.

I got a ticket coming into work yesterday, $250 for speeding in a school zone (29 in a 20, it was after 8 a.m. and I didn’t realize school was back in yet… roads were empty.)

But it happens. An unexpected bill, a forgotten annual expense, or your own damn idiocy.

I already paid this ticket and will adjust my budget for the rest of the month to hopefully accommodate. If I can’t swing it out of my regular spending, I have some wiggle room between my income and expenses, or I could use my emergency fund.

Money mishaps will happen and you need a plan for when they do. Don’t beat yourself up, but do know what you’ll do when these things come around. It’s an important part of your overall financial plan and it’s never too late to do!

Back in my debt payoff days this would have been world-rocking. But now I have sinking and efunds, more margins and it’s just an annoyance.

Are you ready for 2025 money surprises? 🙌

Merry Christmas from me and mine to you and yours. <3

I didn’t decorate for Christmas this year. Every time a rare, free moment came up, I just didn’t feel like it and chose to rest or do other things instead. I’ve been exhausted. The plate has been too full this whole fourth quarter of the year/ year and BG is far to the wayside. I miss it and I’ll be back at some point when I feel like I can breathe again and have something helpful to say.

In the interim, not decorating has been a lovely thing to not have to do - or think about undoing after next week. Jacob and I don’t have kids, so we can pass on having to create magic without guilt, which is great. We’re still doing gifts for each other, and one was a little photoshoot of the dogs in a little sleigh, which we’re excited about. We’ll open gifts and do a little trip up to DFW and I’m so glad our holidays don’t have to look like any one thing to be enjoyed thoroughly.

Personal finance is personal and should be customized to what you want and need and that same theory can be applied to so many things. This year I needed rest, no pressure…and a smaller tree for the new smaller house which I’ll be on the look out for on sale before next year. Happy, restful holidays to all. Don’t let anyone, including yourself, pressure you into doing anything that won’t bring you joy. #minimalchristmas #peace
